Experimentally Induced Sinusitis in Rabbit

Abstract
This study was designed to determine the experimental model of sinusitis. There are many factors causing sinusitis such as infection, allergy, of nasal cavity and paranasal sinus. Among the above factors, the importance of natural ostium was described by many authors. So authors focused the state of the natural ostium of maxillary sinus. In this study, the obstruction of the sinus ostium was made by butylcyanoacrylate and injection of 10¢¥-109 Streptococcus pneumoniae was done to induce experimental sinusitis. The histopathological examination was carried out in 17 adult rabbits in order to investigate the pathphysiological mechanism of paranasal sinusitis.
The results were as follows:
1) Experimental animals with complete obstruction of natural ostium died within 2 weeks. Sinus mucosa of this group revealed acute sinusitis findings.
2) Experimental animals with partial obstruction of natural ostium exhibited acute or chronic sinusitis depending on duration.
3) Histologic findings of acute sinusitis were destruction of cilia, ulceration of epithelium, inflammatory cell infiltration and hyperplasia of goblet cell.
4) Histologic findings of chronic sinusitis were squamous metaplasia of epithelium, hypertrophy and hyperplasia of submucosal gland and thickening of basement membrane.
As a result of this study, it is suggested that the degree of obstruction of sinus ostium is very important to determine experimental model of sinusitis in rabbits.
